THE MAIN INTERFACE PANEL
This is the panel that appears when Stereopticon starts. Its purpose is to
write a short program that will guide Stereopticon through the processing of
the picture.
The large Select Planes box contains 24 small buttons lettered from A in the
far background to X in the near foreground. Each button represents a plane.
Plane J, which has no offset, is marked with a small triangle.
Planes D, J, and P have been pre-selected by default. This setting will
produce a simple stereoscopic picture with a background, middleground, and
foreground. Click a button with the left mouse key to select or deselect a
plane. Press the F1 key to deselect all the planes, F2 to select them all,
and F3 to return to the default setting.
The Select Options box has four buttons. The WHITE button will produce a
picture with a white background and a different palette. (The template
called "LowResWhite.IFF" must be used for pictures with white backgrounds.)
The TRANS button will give a translucent effect. Here's an example that
uses both the WHITE and TRANS options: {[P08,4,7] "The Crystal Ball" }
When your selections have been made, click the OK button. Stereopticon will
write a program based on your selections. For example, the program "wDGJPV"
will produce a 5-plane picture with a white background.
{[0,0,1]>>} If you click OK when the ANIM button is selected, {[A13,0,7]Animation Script Mode}
will begin.
* Click the CONVRT button or press F4 to start the {[A08,0,7]Image Converter}, for
converting clip art or other IFF pictures to pictures that can be used by
Stereopticon.
* Simply to view an IFF picture from the main interface panel, click OK,
use the file requester to load in the picture, and press the H key to hide
the small panel and cross-hairs. Press ESC to return to the interface.
{[0,0,1](A)} Selecting the DOUBLE button adds a "d" to the Stereoptic program and
doubles all offset values. Higher offsets are harder to control and should
be used with caution. When the offset of a plane reaches a certain point,
depending on the glasses and monitor used, and on the picture itself, the
stereoscopic effect will fail. However, a self-contained object, not cut
off by the edges of the screen, can safely be placed well in front of the
normal plane X. This {[P11,4,7] example }, made with the Stereoptic program "dAX",
demonstrates the extreme limits of background and foreground.
* You can use a saved 32-color Stereoptic picture (with one or more planes)
as a background for additional planes. Try this variation on the tutorial
picture: Select planes D and J, load in files {[P01,4,7] P01 } and {[P02,4,7] P02 } from the Pics
drawer and make a two-plane picture with just a background and middleground.
Save it as file "DJ". Then select planes A and P, select the TRANS button
and click OK. First load in "DJ" and click the ALL button, then load file
{[P03,4,7] P03 } and grab the figure. Stereopticon will produce a picture
similar to the tutorial picture, but the figure in the foreground will be a
translucent ghost.
{[0,0,1]>>} When you use a Stereoptic picture as a plane, always assign it
to plane A and grab the entire picture with the ALL button.
* You can combine opaque and translucent elements in the same plane. Take
another look at {[P08,4,7] "The Crystal Ball" }. First the background and the three
figures were processed and saved. Then the interior of the crystal ball was
added as translucent plane U, and the picture was again saved. Finally, the
outline of the ball, the reflections on the ball, and the small face were
added as opaque plane U.
